At Molokini Crater, you have the opportunity to encounter approximately 250 fish species; many of them are native to Hawaii. Molokini is a volcanic cinder cone in Maui County, whose summit is only about 160' above sea level. At the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory, the scientists believe it last erupted about 230,000 years ago. This would make Molokini Crater older than Haleakala Crater, which makes up part of the Island of Maui! Molokini is home to some of the most beautiful coral reefs. Its crescent shape helps to protect the inner area of Molokini, where you will be snorkeling, against strong currents and waves. The average depth inside Molokini crater for snorkeling is only about 10'. These are some of the main reasons that Molokini is Maui's premier snorkel site! Along the slopes of this submerged volcanic cinder cone, you can experience the best visibility in the entire state! Molokini is located just 3 miles off Maui, between South Maui and the Island of Kahoolawe. Most of the vessels will depart from Ma'alaea Harbor. The Island of Lanai is known for playful spinner dolphins and bottlenose dolphins. The warm tropical waters of Lana'i are considered their home. Dolphins travel in groups, or pods. The number of dolphins found in a pod vary from 10 to 100 dolphins. Lanai has been ranked one of the top 10 places to snorkel in the world. During Whale Season, it is not unusual to see Whales during your dolphin search. At any given time you will notice that there are a lot less snorkel boats, and that also means less snorkelers in the water for your Lanai snorkel trip. Lanai is just a short cruise from Lahaina Harbor. The vessel you choose to enjoy your Lanai Snorkel aboard is up to you! 10 % plus discounts available when booking on-line through Travel Hawaii.
